Asakhe Cuntsulana

Asakhe Cuntsulana joined PMAR from 25 to 31 August as our fourth fully-funded artist-in-residence for 2025.

Describing himself as a “visionary musician”, Asakhe Cuntsulana’s musical journey began in the school choir, and evolved through training at Rhodes University, mastering instruments like the Adungu (Ugandan harp), Kalimba (thumb piano), and uHadi (Xhosa bow harp).

Originally from kuGatyane, Eastern Cape, Asakhe blends African indigenous sounds with jazz and classical influences, and has performed at festivals and events locally and events internationally. His two-week trip to Norway in August 2024 showcased African musical traditions, fostering cross-cultural dialogue, and the boundless nature of music to connect people.

As founder of IThala leAfrika, Asakhe also promotes cultural enrichment and preserves indigenous knowledge through music and art. Asakhe’s creative ethos centers around the power of music to unite people, elicit memory, and ultimately restore people to their core purpose.

During his PMAR residency, Asakhe worked with community groups in Porterville. These dialogues and workshops culminated in an evening of transportative music, which also showcased the talents of two local musical groups – Messengers of God and Young Creators – as well as local maverick musician, Andre-Leo.
